The picture expresses a deep feeling of guilt. Howson himself intensely believes in the power of suffering as a path to redemption.  The anatomic study of a tortured Judas suggests a psychological self portrait.  The phantasmagorical look of the landscape seems to reflect the anguish in which the artist is immersed. Howson’s atmosphere is cruel, but heartening.
