Darkytown Rebellion by Kara Walker

Break color art

Darkytown Rebellion
2001 Musee d´Art Moderne, Luxembourg
Cut paper & projection on wall

Walker creates a visual storytelling almost theatrical. The figures express themselves freely, liberated from the limitations of the ancestral canvas. This artwork is the size of an entire room. It combines the silhouettes with colourful light projection. Thus, while the observer goes through the space, its own shadow is projected and mixed together with the figures’ shadow on the wall, providing a new level in the relationship between the observer and the artwork.
